The Venice stretches across numerous small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between mouths of Po (south) and Piave (north) Rivers.

Venice city has a phenomena of Acqua alta, or "high water" what means the city is flooded with water. The phenomenon is most likely to take place between late September and April, and especially in the months of October, November & December.

Venice is being flooded or Acqua alta phenomena occurs in this Italian city when certain events like following coincide: very high tide (usually during a full or new moon), low atmospheric pressure, blow of a shcirocco wind up to the narrow, shallow Adriatic Sea (it forces water into the Venetian Lagoon). During the last few centuries, the frequency of acqua alta has increased from fewer than 10 times a year to more than 60 times a year.

The acqua alta phenomena makes people to believe that Venice is sinking, although the city have sank about 10 cm in the 20th century because of industrial groundwater extraction, it is not true any more. The sinking of Venice was stopped in 1960 when artesian wells on the mainland were capped.
